Vagabonding – Interview With Travel Writer Rolf Potts
Filed under What's NEW This Month
Vagabonding. It’s a strange word. Images of wandering, hairy vagrants come to mind. When put into the context of renown travel writer Rolf Potts, however, it becomes a celebratory attitude towards the entire travel experience.
This 54 minute interview with Rolf is vitally important because it’s going to show you how to best use your money… and more importantly, your time. After all, what use is having millions of dollars in the bank if you have no clue how you’re going to live your life?
For many reasons, travelers can oftentimes miss the point of their entire travel experience. This is especially true for those of us who are trying to make a full-time income while traveling. Rolf, and his book, Vagabonding, are the answer to that.
Potts has reported from more than fifty countries for the likes of National Geographic Traveler, the New York Times Magazine, Slate.com, Conde Nast Traveler, Outside, National Public Radio, and the Travel Channel. A veteran travel columnist for the likes of Salon.com and World Hum, his adventures have taken him across six continents, and include piloting a fishing boat 900 miles down the Laotian Mekong, hitchhiking across Eastern Europe, traversing Israel on foot, bicycling across Burma, and driving a Land Rover from Sunnyvale, California to Ushuaia, Argentina.
He’s is perhaps best known for promoting the ethic of independent travel, and his book on the subject, Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel, has been through eleven printings and translated into several foreign languages. His newest book, Marco Polo Didn’t Go There: Stories and Revelations from One Decade as a Postmodern Travel Writer, won a 2009 Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers, and became the first American-authored book to win Italy’s prestigious Chatwin Prize for travel writing.
I (John) was fortunate enough to catch Rolf at his north-central Kansas farmhouse that he keeps on 30 acres near his family. Though he rarely stays in one place for more than a few weeks or months, Potts feels somewhat at home in Bangkok, Cairo, Pusan, New Orleans, and in Kansas. Each July he can be found in France, where he is the summer writer-in-residence at the Paris American Academy.
In this ‘Vagabonding’ interview with Rolf Potts, you’ll discover…
- Why the pace that 99% of travelers choose will cause them to miss some of the richest, most meaningful travel experiences that you’ll ever have.
- What, exactly, Vagabonding is and why it’s vitally important to understand this concept in order to get the most out of your travel experiences.
- How to ‘earn your travel freedom.’ (Hint: it’s not what you think! While sure, it relates to money, there’s a big twist here!)
- Ever feel like you’re connecting ONLY with travelers and never with the locals of the land? Rolf lays down several tips on how to connect with the locals of any land you visit.
- Preparing yourself to experience a new cultural is extremely important… but what is the balance between over-preparation – causing you to have too many expectations that may be unrealistic… and under-preparation – causing you to potentially make a fool of yourself? Rolf lays down the good word!
- TONS of travel tips such as how to stay safe, avoid scams, find hidden, off-the-beaten-track treasures, get to know locals, get them to show you hidden secrets, the low-down on the right guidebook to use, and much more.
You may think of yourself as a seasoned traveler… or a traveler who has only been around the block. Either way, studying the works of Rolf Potts is an absolute MUST. His ideas and the content in this interview will change the way you look at traveling… and potentially even the entire world. I can’t recommend him enough. Take a listen!
