Travel Photographer Job: Can You Get Paid For Your Photographs?

Are you looking for travel photographer jobs? Do you like to take photos of interesting and beautiful things?

If you do, why not become a travel photographer? Traveling to different locations will give you more opportunity to see and capture interesting sceneries. The great thing about this is you that you can get paid for your photographs.

Yes, it’s that simple. Travel and find sceneries you would like to take photos of and voila! It’s money in your pocket. Nothing is more precious than making money out of something you love to do.

So, how to do it?

Ok, first of all, you must have a plan. Identify what type of travel photographs sell in the market. Then, match it with your interests. You must build a compromise between your passion and marketability. If you take photographs solely based on your passion and interests, the pictures may not easily sell because no one would really have a use for it. On the other hand, if you take photographs only for money’s sake – which is fine to some degree, but you might get bored and unmotivated.

When you already have prospect subjects in mind, travel to places where you can find them. This is the investment part of your venture especially if you are still new at travel photography. You have to finance your travels at first.

Always remember to travel light and bring only things that you need. Careful planning is essential. Insuring your equipments is always a good idea too. Once you have reached your destinations, do your magic!

Be adventurous and always aim for quality and striking shots. Always aim to be daring and different but not too much. Being too artsy with photos may diminish its commercial value. However, it is fine once in a while. After all, you are also traveling to enjoy and to feed your need to express through your art. Stay focus though.

If you have already assembled a lot of photos, the next on the agenda is to market them and find buyers. This is probably the most difficult part of the work. Don’t worry. If your photos are excellent, finding interested parties should be easy.

If you have done your research just like what I have stated earlier, you will know which companies and businesses to contact. Publishers of travel magazines and newspapers top the list. Companies will always want some samples. So, you have to create a presentation or a portfolio that will attract customers.

One of the best venues to sell and promote your photos is thru the internet. Have a website or create a free blogsite for starters. You can put some of your work there for others to see. Eventually, it can evolve into an elaborate business website for your photographs. It will not only serve as a marketing tool but also a platform for your business transactions.

Travel Photography is fun and exciting. You are very motivated because you love your work. And once you establish yourself into the industry, your profits will grow and your reputation will build up. Sooner or later, you can expand your niches and venture to other subjects. It’s an evolving process which is surely worthwhile and very rewarding.

How To Take Paid Vacations

“Life is an adventure.” I often hear this cliché from just about everywhere. I wouldn’t have believed in that saying years ago. How could I? Working slavishly in a cubicle for 8 hours is not an adventure. It is a misery.

Things came into a U turn when a close friend of mine persuaded me to travel with him. "What the heck?" I needed a break. So, we traveled all over Asia and it was a lot of fun and very liberating. Unfortunately, my finances were not able to sustain my travels for much longer.

My friend knew this and he was willing to lend me some money to prolong my vacation. Unknowingly to me, this is my friend’s way of helping me realize that I should drop my 9 to 5 dead end job and emulate his way of life. It was his way to convince me that his lifestyle is way better than mine with my so-called stable job.

At first, I thought of him as a bum and a totally carefree person; roaming all around globe spending his family’s money. He was rich to start with. He came from a very affluent family. I really thought that he was just a spoiled rich kid enjoying his money. It turned out, I was only half right.

In reality, all his expenses – the travel, the food, the accommodation – were all from his own pocket. Not from his inheritance or his mooching. He was earning his own income while we were traveling together! To my surprise, he was earning his income as we were having the time of our lives. I could not believe that he was earning way more than I was and that he was earning it all while having fun in his travels.

He opened my eyes to travel blogging and travel photography. At first, I thought he was just an internet aficionado or something. Uploading his captured pictures and making short blurbs about his activities and discoveries, I really thought that he was just having fun with his laptop and the Internet I haven’t realized that he was earning a hefty amount through it. It didn’t look like work to me.

I noticed that he would always tinker with his laptop while we were having breakfast or coffee and maybe once or twice in the afternoon or evening. It was only a few minutes at a time. I was amazed to finally realize that what he was doing was making him richer by the minute.

He had four websites. One for his travel photography business, two are for his travel blogs and the last one was his project website, also a photography site. His two blog sites had great traffic and he was selling affiliate products. At that time, he was putting new articles about our travel and adventures.

The other site was more of his personal business. He was selling his pictures. It was also his online portfolio and a lot of publishing companies had already bought his work. After showing me all the stuff he was doing, I didn’t need to ask. I instantly know that he was earning quite a sum.

He noticed I was envious. So he told me to do some blogging and he promised he’d help me with the site building and optimization. He said it was easy and I should not worry about it.

I was apprehensive at first but ultimately, I decided to quit my job and went with him and this time to be some sort of apprentice. I never had problems with the writing; I was a natural writer, being an editor of my high school paper. The main challenge was the SEO and increasing traffic. But it was all good. It was quite easy actually.

Now, I have two travel blog sites for my affiliate marketing and I am also selling E-books about tips in travel blogging and writing. Best of all, I’m funding all my travels and adventures now. I’m having fun while I’m earning my living. This is my life and its an adventure.

By the way, I still meet and travel with my friend from time to time. I owe it all to him.

Bringing your complete set of equipment will only end up being a burden to your travel so why bring equipment you won’t really use?

Travel Photography Job Mistake #2. Not Using A Camera’s Automatic Settings

The thing about photography is that sometimes great opportunities for a picture are fleeting. You don’t have enough time to change lens or adjust your camera settings. So you should know when is the right time to bring and use a camera with fixed lens. Learn to love your camera’s automatic settings such as, exposure and focus.

Taking photographs about culture and local activities requires readiness and photographers instinct. So you should be ready to point and click whenever an opportunity presents itself. Trust your equipment!

Travel Photography Job Mistake #3. Not Being Polite Or Respectful To Local Customs

Taking candid shots of people is priceless but sometimes people just don’t want to be photographed. Before, doing some “people shooting” you must assess first if the atmosphere and the mood of the locals who you are photographing.

You should ask first before taking the picture. Ask if you can take some portraits of the people and if you can take some candid shots of them going about their daily business. Once you have permission, you can fire away with your camera even without asking.

Take note that some places have traditional customs that go against your craft. Islamic countries for example, they don’t want their women photographed. Always be informed about the customs of the people you are photographing.

If you can do it without looking suspicious use a camera with a long zoom. That way you can take pictures without causing discomfort to the subject.

Travel Photography Job Mistake #4. Not Scheduling the Photographs

As a photographer, you should take note of the best times of the day to capture your photograph. Always study the scenery first. Find out when the natural light will be most beneficial to your photo capture. Some shots look better at dawn while others look better during early morning or evening.

Most of the time, landscape photographs can be best captured when the there are no distractions from people. If it is best taken early, make it a point to go their early.
